India’s Badminton Asian Mixed Team Championship ended with a 2-3 loss to China in the semi-finals, but not before their doubles teams put up a strong fight, leading to a first-ever medal – a bronze – for India in the tournament.
Despite a 0-2 deficit, the doubles teams brought India back to level terms (2-2) after HS Prannoy and P V Sindhu lost their matches. However, the team could not clinch the victory in the end.
In the mixed team event, Prannoy lost to the 2016 world junior champion in just 45 minutes, while Sindhu, who had been recovering from a heel injury that kept her out for five months, put up a strong fight against her 24-year-old opponent before bowing out after one hour and 10 minutes.
However, the men’s doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Chirag Shetty, and the women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, managed to win their matches and level the scores at 2-2.
Unfortunately, India could not clinch the victory as the mixed doubles pair of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto lost to their opponents in the decider.
The match lasted just 34 minutes, as Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin proved too strong. In the quarter-finals, India had an impressive comeback to beat Hong Kong 3-2 and secure a first-ever medal in the tournament.
