On Monday, 17th April, the Royal Challengers Bangalore took on the Chennai Super Kings in the 24th match of IPL 2023. What turned out to be a very close game also highlighted the gaping holes in both teams, weaknesses their opponents could exploit.
RCB’s batting lineup looked thin, and their pace bowling lineup, barring an inspired Mohammed Siraj, was very expensive. Meanwhile, CSK was light on bowling options, relying on two uncapped pacers and an IPL rookie to defend a total at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. While they did remarkably well to achieve the feat, CSK is unlikely to get away with that against other opponents.
However, most of this can’t be attributed to the teams’ auction strategy or planning, and it has more to do with unexpected injuries to their players.
Injuries to players often ruin weeks and months of planning by an IPL franchise, and while teams can secure a replacement for them, losing a player who is picked as part of a specific plan will hurt a side.
On that note, let’s look at the complete list of players injured or unavailable for Group B teams.

Chennai Super Kings
1) Kyle Jamieson – Replaced by Sisanda Magala
2) Mukesh Choudhary – Replaced by Akash Singh
CSK’s first injury was that of New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson who they signed at the auction for his base price of ₹1 Crore. CSK replaced him with Proteas seamer Sisanda Magala to bolster their death bowling department.
In a worse blow, last season’s revelation, Mukesh Choudhary couldn’t recover from a back injury and is also out of IPL 2023. CSK signed left-arm pacer Akash Singh as his replacement, and he has started his IPL career on a promising note, picking up four wickets in two games.
However, while not suffering any other season-ending injuries, CSK is in a bit of an injury crisis now, with Sisanda Magala suffering a split webbing that’ll keep him out of action for a while. Pacer Simarjeet Singh is also recovering from an injury.
Meanwhile, Deepak Chahar‘s injury problems persist, with the swing bowler picking up a hamstring injury in CSK’s clash against MI. MS Dhoni is nursing a knee injury himself but is fit to play.
Lastly, with Ben Stokes also picking up a niggle, MS Dhoni and Co. will feel they’re stretched pretty thin, and all things considered, they’ve done a pretty good job so far.
Gujarat Titans
1) Kane Williamson – Replaced by Dasun Shanaka
GT is a team relatively untroubled by injuries before the start of the season but received a real blow during their season opener against CSK. Star batter Kane Williamson suffered an ACL injury while trying to parry a six-going ball back into the field of play, instantly getting taken off.
He’s unfortunately ruled out for quite a while and remains a doubt for the ODI World Cup later in the year. GT, however, smartly replaced him with Sri Lankan limited-overs captain Dasun Shanaka.
₹6 Crore buy Shivam Mavi hasn’t featured for GT this season, and he has likely been suffering from a niggle too.
Punjab Kings
1) Jonny Bairstow – Replaced by Matthew Short
2) Raj Bawa – Replaced by Gurnoor Singh Brar
PBKS was dealt a blow before the start of the season, with England batter Jonny Bairstow ruled out of IPL 2023 with an injury. Bairstow is a devastating batter and could’ve been PBKS’ trump card in the IPL, and a big miss for them. BBL 22/23’s Player of the Tournament Matthew Short is his replacement, and the batter has given a decent account of himself so far.
India U-19 all-rounder Raj Bawa is also ruled out of the tournament, with Punjab all-rounder Gurnoor Singh Brar signed as his replacement.
PBKS also has some other injury problems to contend with.
Liam Livingstone is still recovering from a knee injury he sustained in December 2022, and while he has joined the PBKS squad, he is yet to reach full fitness.
Skipper Shikhar Dhawan also missed PBKS’s clash against LSG, with Sam Curran doing impressively on his captaincy debut. However, Dhawan should be fit to return for PBKS’ next match against RCB.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
1) Will Jacks – Replaced by Michael Bracewell
2) Rajat Patidar – Replaced by Vyshak Vijaykumar
3) Reece Topley – Replaced by Wayne Parnell
Plenty has gone wrong for RCB at the start of the season, and they’ve been affected deeply by injuries. Their batting lineup, which is usually their strength, looks very weak in the absence of Rajat Patidar, RCB’s breakout star last season.Â
They replaced him with seamer Vyshak Vijaykumar, who made a promising debut, but had a torrid outing in his second game against CSK.
There were plenty of expectations from powerful England all-rounder Will Jacks, but it looks like we’ll have to wait until next season to see him play in the IPL, with him ruled out due to a muscle injury. RCB smartly signed in New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell to replace him.
Reece Topley, the England left-arm seamer, was RCB’s cover as Josh Hazlewood recovered from his injury problems, but Topley suffered an ankle injury in RCB’s season opener that ruled him out of IPL 2023. Proteas pacer Wayne Parnell returned to the IPL after a long time as his replacement.
With Hazlewood still not fit to play, Wanindu Hasaranga missing a few games, and skipper Faf Du Plessis sustaining an injury against CSK, RCB has some injury problems they hope will get resolved soon.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Aiden Markram’s SRH seems to have some luck going their way, with no significant injury problems heading into the season. Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, and Marco Jansen missed SRH’s first game of the season as they were on international duty.
They had to face a defeat at the hands of LSG on their return, but since then, they have registered back-to-back victories, looking like a solid unit that has all bases covered.
