India clinched a historic victory over England in the third Test, securing a commanding 2-1 lead in the five-match series. The match was marked by several milestone achievements by various players. However, one standout moment that resonated with Indian fans was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable double century, accompanied by heartfelt celebrations from his domestic teammate Sarfaraz Khan on Day 4.
Nevertheless, it was Ravindra Jadeja who claimed the player of the match award, a decision few could contest. Jadeja’s stellar performance included a century in the first innings and a five-wicket haul in the second, effectively steering India towards triumph.
England held the upper hand at different stages during the initial two days, notably highlighted by opener Ben Duckett’s impressive innings of 153 runs off just 151 balls.
The tide turned early on Day 3, starting with Joe Root falling to Jasprit Bumrah while attempting a reverse scoop. Yashasvi Jaiswal took a brilliant catch at slips in a moment that has since been seen as the point where England started unravelling.
Sarfaraz made a dazzling debut by scoring 62 runs off 66 balls. Unfortunately, his innings came to an end due to a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja, who was just one run away from reaching his century.
Jadeja eventually reached his century, but his celebration was subdued. He later posted an apology to Sarfaraz on social media. The all-rounder was dismissed the next day, having scored 112 runs off 225 balls.
Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a significant milestone by claiming his 500th Test wicket in England’s first innings, dismissing Zak Crawley. However, he had to withdraw from the match after the day’s play due to a family emergency.
Jaiswal faced an unfortunate injury forcing him to retire hurt after reaching his century on Day 3. Upon his return to the crease, following Shubman Gill’s dismissal at 91, he displayed remarkable resilience, crafting an unbeaten 214 runs off just 236 balls. Notably, Jaiswal matched the record for the most sixes in a Test innings, previously solely held by Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, smashing 12 sixes along with 14 fours. Of particular note, he struck three consecutive sixes off James Anderson, a feat not accomplished against the England great since Australia’s George Bailey in 2013. Meanwhile, Sarfaraz remained undefeated on 68 runs off 72 balls, featuring six boundaries and three sixes. India then bowled out England for 122 runs, securing a resounding victory by 434 runs in the third Test.
