Nike has ended its sponsorship deal Russian Premier League club Spartak Moscow since they won’t be participating in European tournaments next season, the company and the club said.
UEFA, governing body of European soccer, concluded Russia would have no partnered teams taking part in its club rivalries in the 2022-23 season because of Moscow’s tactical mission in Ukraine.
Spartak, who had been supported by Nike starting around 2005, said on Thursday they were searching for another gear provider after Nike let them know it would never again be supporting the club.
In a statement, Nike said it had informed Spartak that it would no longer be the club’s kit sponsor “given UEFA’s decision to suspend all Russian clubs from UEFA competition.”
The Europa League last-16 matches among Spartak and RB Leipzig were canceled in February after UEFA suspended all Russian clubs from its rivalries.
Russia sent huge number of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24 in what it called an exceptional activity to debase its southern neighbor’s tactical abilities and root out individuals it called perilous patriots.
The West has forced clearing sanctions on Russia and furnished Ukraine with military help accordingly.
