Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool on Saturday, when Taiwo Awoniyi scored in the second half to pull the Midlands team off the bottom of the Premier League standings.

Forest produced a fantastic performance to clinch their second victory of the season, leaving Liverpool, who were looking for their third successive league win, with few complaints.

Juergen Klopp’s team slowed in the first half as a disciplined Forest side threw them off their stride.

Forest took the lead in the 55th minute when Awoniyi, who was originally signed by Liverpool but never played, poached a rebound after his initial shot hit the post.

The hosts were threatening on the counter-attack and had multiple opportunities to gain some breathing room.

They were, however, grateful to goalie Dean Henderson, who produced a number of stops, the biggest of which came in stoppage time when he miraculously kept out a fantastic Virgil van Dijk close-range header from a corner.

Forest hung on to 19th place, one point ahead of Leicester City, with nine points from 12 games.

Liverpool, who is still without an away win, is seventh in the table with 16 points from 11 games.

“It has to be a turning point. If we can beat Liverpool, we can beat anyone,” Forest’s Ryan Yates said.
