Following his deportation from the country almost a year ago, Novak Djokovic finally made it to Australia on Tuesday. He will compete for a 10th men’s singles championship at the Australian Open next month.

The 35-year-old was deported the day before the competition in Melbourne because he entered the nation without having received a COVID-19 vaccination.

The Australian government said it had decided to revoke the decision to cancel Djokovic’s visa after taking into account all pertinent factors, and in November it granted the Serbian a visa to enter the Grand Slam competition.

All COVID-related border restrictions in Australia, including the demand for proof of immunisation status upon entry, have been eliminated since the cancellation of Djokovic’s visa in January 2022.

Djokovic’s arrival in Adelaide, where he will compete in the Adelaide International starting on Sunday, was confirmed by a Tennis Australia representative.

Djokovic would be travelling to Australia, according to Craig Tiley, the director of the Australian Open tournament, who also expressed his hopes that he would be welcomed.

“I have a great deal of confidence in the Australian public. We’re a very well-educated sporting public, particularly those who come to the tennis, they love their tennis, they love seeing greatness, they love seeing great athleticism, great matches,” Tiley said.

“And I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react like we hope they would react and have respect for that.”
