The second one-day international between India and New Zealand was called off on Sunday due to heavy rain, leaving the Kiwis with a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

When India batted, they were 22 for no loss in 4.5 overs when rain forced them off the field for the first time. The match had been reduced to 29 overs a side when play resumed at Seddon Park in Hamilton.

Suryakumar Yadav smashed three sixes, including an audacious reverse-swept six off spinner Michael Bracewell, to brighten up a dreary day with a breezy 34 not out off 25 balls.

Shubman Gill, on the other hand, was on 45 when rain intervened once more. The match was called off with India leading by 89 runs in 12.5 overs.

India, who won the previous T20 series but were thrashed by seven wickets in the first one-dayer in Auckland, can only hope to level the series in Christchurch on Wednesday.

The visitors rested several frontline players, including regular captain Rohit Sharma, following their T20 World Cup campaign in Australia, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual winners England.
