Former India opener Murali Vijay slammed former India cricketer and current commentator Sanjay Manjrekar on Friday for his “surprised” comment on him being on top of the best conversion rate list for India at home in Tests.
The incident took place just before the start of Day 2 of the first Test between India and Australia at VCA stadium in Nagpur when the broadcasters showed the best conversion rates for Indian batters who have a minimum of 10 fifty-plus scores in Test cricket.
In this list, Vijay was at the top with a conversion rate of 60 per cent, followed by Mohammad Azharuddin with 54.2 per cent, Polly Umrigar with 53.8 per cent, former India captain Virat Kohli with 52 per cent and current India captain Rohit Sharma with 50 per cent.
In his 30 Tests at home, Vijay scored 6 fifties and 9 hundreds with a conversion rate of 60 per cent.
“I am surprised to see Murali at the top,” Manjrekar said on-air while seeing the graphic.
Manjrekar seemed a bit amazed at seeing Vijay’s name on the top of a list which also included the likes of Rohit, Virat, Polly and Azharuddin. His comment didn’t go well with Vijay as he immediately took to Twitter to show his disappointment.

“Some Mumbai ex players can never be appreciative of the south! #showsomelove #equality #fairplayforall @sanjaymanjrekar @BCCI,” tweeted Vijay.
However, later in the day, when Rohit completed his century after lunch, Manjrekar took up the topic and highlighted Vijay’s contributions, saying people often forget players like him.
“He (Rohit) is No. 2 now with eight hundreds when it comes to conversion rates at home. It is a good thing that Murali Vijay is in that list because we tend to forget the contributions that people like him make. 12 Test hundreds – nine out of them at home and a brilliant conversion rate right at the top,” Manjrekar said after Rohit reached his century on Day 2 of the first Test match.
Recently in last month, Vijay announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. He represented India in 61 Tests, scoring 3982 runs at an average of 38.29, hitting 12 centuries and 15 fifties. Notably, he was also the leading run-scorer in the 2014 Test tour of England.
He also scored 339 runs in his 17 ODIs and 169 runs in his 9 T20Is for India. Vijay played 135 first-class matches, scoring 9205 runs, including 25 hundreds and 38 half-centuries.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Vijay was an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings side, which won the trophy in 2010, 2011 and 2018.
