Introduction

Manchester United, one of the topmost clubs in Europe, is now just seen as a joke. The Red Devils were once the greatest club of England and one of the best in Europe. They still are if one sees their achievements and history of winning titles. But it was all because of their legendary Manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. His legacy and work ethics are one to be remembered and to be learned from. However, ever since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement almost a decade ago, the club has not been doing so great.

Post-Ferguson Era

Though Manchester United still won a few trophies after Sir Alex, the club has had rough and difficult seasons. It was very disappointing to watch as a fan. Manager Erik Ten Hag won a few trophies for the club but still couldn’t win their fan’s hearts. Their losses and performances were many times more painful to watch than his wins. The manager was sacked after a terrible start in the 2024/2025 season of the club. José Mourinho, the special one had a good run in Manchester United as the Manager by winning Europa league and League cup as well as finishing second in both EPL and FA cup. It was the best thing in the post-Ferguson era. Yet the Special one, got sacked due to his uncontrollable and difficult behaviour towards the club officials and the players.

Sacking of Erik Ten Hag led to the signing of Ruben Amorim who was at that time, the manager of Sporting CP. Ruben had a good year in that club. Even though he was signed as the manager of Manchester United the situation never seemed to change. The club was still in shambles. This season, they are currently placed in the 15th position in the table, with only 3 matches remaining.

The Tottenham Story…

Tottenham Hotspurs FC, the situation is like United but also much worse than them. Tottenham which is ranked in the top 6 clubs of England with 26 trophies. Tottenham is going through a big 17-year trophy drought that has put the club’s status and identity in danger. The club has been mocked and trolled on the social media by the rival club fans with memes and jokes. Spurs are now only seen as the club with an empty trophy cabinet or a trophy-less club.

The tenure of Mauricio Pochettino in Tottenham Hotspurs F.C is considered as one of the best. Tottenham were in top form; they defeated many strong and great clubs which led them to the Champions league final as well. And yet Spurs didn’t win any major trophies. The loss in the Champions League final was the end of Pochettino’s era, as their performance started degrading from next season.

After that the ex-Chelsea and ex-Manchester United Manager José Mourinho was appointed. The special one’s time in Spurs was neither good nor bad. The shocking thing was that Mourinho got sacked a week before the Carabao Cup final. It was devastating for him and the fans because it was the wrong time to sack the manager of the Club. Of course, Spurs lost the final of the Carabao Cup. The chairman, Daniel Levy, is to be blamed for Mourinho’s sacking. In the last six to seven years, Spurs have sacked 4 managers. This led the fans to know that it isn’t any of the managers who were at fault. The club has been in danger for the past 17 years, and it was the fault of the Chairman Daniel Levy.

Who’s at fault ?

Truth be told, ever since Levy became the chairman in 2002, Tottenham has only won one trophy which was in 2008.  After that, the 17 years of trophy drought haunts the fans of Tottenham even today. Great Managers like José Mourinho and Antonio Conte failed to win major trophies for Spurs and it is the only club where they have not won any Trophy.

The New Manager

In 2023, Ange Postecoglou was appointed as the new Tottenham manager who had a great run in Celtic F.C. Winning trophies as well as a great career but not so famous in the industry. Spurs fans were happy and liked Postecoglou as he had good charisma and attitude. The 2023/2024 season start was fabulous, and Ange even won the coach of the month many times in that season. But an injury crisis led Tottenham to lose matches and finished 5th in the season. Everyone was amazed with Postecoglou’s tactics and management as everyone thought Spurs will get relegated this season, especially since their star striker Harry Kane had left the club to join Bayern Munich. But this did not affect Tottenham at all.

Current Season Crises

Current season of 2024/2025 is a big downfall as the season started for Postecoglou with good form but again the injury crisis pulled Spurs down. This injury crisis was none like the other injury crises which teams face every time. More than half of the main team players were injured for a very long time. It is difficult for any team to win in these situations. Tottenham lost 19 matches this season for the first time and is currently placed 16th in the league table right behind Manchester United.

Even though both Spurs and United had a pretty bad season, they have done very well in Europa league and both are in the semi-final. Spurs & United have the chance to be in the final and win the European trophy. There is also the possibility that they face each other in the final. In the first leg both have secured a win, where Spurs have won 3-1 against Bodø/Glimt and Manchester have won against Athletic Bilbao with 3-0 score. Both have a chance to win the 2nd leg and proceed to the finals. The bigger question is will one of them win the competition and get a major trophy.

On one hand, it is about Manchester’s glory and respect, on the other hand it will end the trophy drought and return Tottenham to its former glory. Spurs have beaten Manchester United 3 times this season in the Premier league and Carabao cup. In an interview Ange Postecoglou said that he always wins trophies in his second season.

The Question

Can Postecoglou do it? Will he end the Drought? Or will Amorim return the past glory to Manchester? Nobody knows for sure but let’s sit tight and wait for the semis to get over this week.
