In the second T20I match between India and the West Indies, the West Indies displayed their dominance once again, securing a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
After winning the toss, India chose to bat first, but they lost early wickets in the form of Shubman Gill (7) and Suryakumar Yadav (1). Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma then built a partnership, but Ishan Kishan was eventually dismissed by Romario Shepherd. Sanju Samson also fell, leading to the arrival of skipper Hardik Pandya at the crease.
Varma and Pandya collaborated for a 40-run partnership, with Varma impressively scoring his maiden T20I fifty, contributing 51 off 41 balls. Handy contributions from Axar and Bishnoi, in the end, helped India post a competitive total of 153 on the scoreboard.
India started strong in their defence when Hardik Pandya took two wickets in the first over. Arshdeep then dismissed Mayers, but Pooran’s counterattacking style put West Indies ahead in the game. However, a brilliant knock of 67 off 40 balls by Pooran ended, triggering a dramatic collapse for the West Indies, losing four quick wickets for just 3 runs in 13 deliveries.
Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role with the ball, taking crucial wickets of Hetmyer and Holder. Later, Akeal Hosein and Alzarri Joseph’s unbeaten 26-run partnership for the ninth wicket prevented India from levelling the series.
Hardik Pandya was outstanding with the ball, claiming three wickets, while Arshdeep and Mukesh took one wicket each. In terms of batting, Tilak Varma once again emerged as the highest scorer and displayed his talent on the slow pitches of the Caribbean.
Looking ahead, the West Indies will aim for another victory to seal the series, while India will need to win all three remaining matches to win the five-match T20I series. The third T20I will take place on August 8th at the same venue.
