India is in a commanding position after an exceptional batting performance by the opening batsmen. Starting from an overnight score of 80/0, the Indian openers formed a historic partnership of 229 runs against the West Indies. This surpassed the previous record set by Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar in 2002 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The debutant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, made a strong impression by scoring his first century in Test cricket during his debut match. He became the 17th Indian batsman to achieve this feat in the longest format of the game. Currently, Jaiswal remains at the crease with an unbeaten score of 143*.
Captain Rohit Sharma also reached a century, his 10th in Tests and 3rd against the West Indies. However, he was dismissed shortly after reaching this milestone. Sharma played a vital innings of 103 runs off 221 deliveries, which included ten fours and two sixes.
Following Sharma’s dismissal, Shubman Gill came in at No. 3 but could not contribute much, getting out after scoring just six runs. Virat Kohli, who came in to bat at No. 4, remained unbeaten on 36 runs off 96 deliveries. Kohli and Jaiswal built a partnership of 72 runs, and they aim to add more runs on Day 3 of the match.
Undoubtedly, the day belonged to Yashasvi Jaiswal, and with a comfortable lead of 162 runs, India will seek to extend their advantage on Day 3. Interestingly, Jaiswal has his sights set on a remarkable record of becoming the first Indian player to achieve a double century on debut.
