The athletics stadium on the grounds of the Southern Command’s Army Sports Institute (ASI) will be named after Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra in acknowledgment of his notable accomplishment and to inspire youthful competitors preparing at the institute.

Defence minister Rajnath Singh will be the chief visitor for the naming function to be hung on August 23. Head of Army Staff General MM Naravane and Southern Army Commander Lt Gen JS Nain will go to the capacity. The office will be known as ‘Neeraj Chopra Army Sports Stadium, Pune Cantonment’.

“The stadium is of international standard where all athletes are trained every daily. We have improved the facility recently. Since the stadium is not named after any prominent figure, we thought to name it after Neeraj Chopra as the best gift on his first visit to the ASI after winning the Olympic Gold medal,” an army officer said.

Built and commissioned in 2006, the arena has a 400m engineered to track and guest plans for observers. Chopra, who is a lesser-charged official of the Indian Army, had done a short preparation of Javelin throwing at the beginning phase of his profession at the ASI.

“Chopra will interact with other athletes at the ASI during his maiden visit,” the officer said.
