In a landmark development for sports in India, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently announced a significant collaboration between the state and Manchester City Football Club, the defending Premier League champions. Manchester City has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a world-class sports school in Bengal, which is expected to be a major boost to the region’s sporting infrastructure and talent development.
This partnership underscores the growing stature of West Bengal as a rising hub for sports in India, with football enjoying a special place in the hearts of the local population. Mamata Banerjee, while making the announcement, emphasized the state’s deep-rooted passion for sports, particularly football, and highlighted how this collaboration with a global football giant like Manchester City will elevate the region’s sporting ecosystem. She noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision to encourage young athletes, improve the quality of sports education, and position Bengal as a leading destination for sports development in India.
Manchester City’s Expansion into India
Last September, Manchester City Football Club, in partnership with Techno India Group, revealed their plan to establish the first-ever Manchester City Football School in India, specifically in Kolkata, the cultural and sporting capital of West Bengal. This announcement was a significant milestone for football enthusiasts in India, marking the arrival of one of the world’s most successful football clubs to the nation’s grassroots football scene. This move ultimately further encourages the City Group franchise model as a whole who already partly own a Club in ISL or Indian Super League – (Mumbai City FC) and proves that the UAE’s Royal family, who also happen to be the major stakeholder of the city Football Group (81%) are optimistic about the future of football in India.
The Manchester City Football School in Kolkata will offer students an authentic football education experience, directly inspired by the club’s renowned coaching philosophy and methodology. With Manchester City having been crowned Premier League champions for an impressive fourth successive season, the club brings not only a wealth of knowledge but also a winning mindset to Indian soil. The school aims to provide budding footballers with top-tier training that mirrors the same techniques and practices employed by Manchester City’s first team in the United Kingdom.

World-Class Coaching and Facilities
One of the standout features of this collaboration is the transfer of expertise from Manchester City to India. Official Manchester City coaches, fully trained in the club’s signature style of football, will relocate from Manchester to Kolkata to oversee the operations of the football school. These full-time coaches will deliver a bespoke and customized football program designed to nurture the potential of young athletes, with a focus on building their technical skills, tactical understanding, and overall fitness.
The coaching program will adhere to the same high standards used at Manchester City’s academy and first team, with lessons tailored to each player’s development level. The aim is to create a learning environment that fosters creativity, teamwork, and a deep understanding of the sport. The school will also ensure that students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including high-quality training grounds, fitness centers, and modern classrooms to support both their physical and academic growth.

A Bright Future for Football in Bengal
The establishment of the Manchester City Football School in Kolkata is expected to have far-reaching benefits beyond just football training. It will provide students with opportunities to learn valuable life skills such as discipline, leadership, and perseverance, qualities that are essential for success both on and off the field. This initiative will also provide local talent with the exposure needed to compete at national and international levels, potentially leading to more Indian players making a mark on the global football stage.
Furthermore, this collaboration represents a significant investment in Bengal’s sports infrastructure. By partnering with a world-leading football club like Manchester City, the state can expect to see a broader impact on the local economy, tourism, and the promotion of sports as a viable career option for young people. The football school is likely to attract attention from scouts, sponsors, and football enthusiasts from across the country and beyond.

Statements from Key Stakeholders
At the time of the original announcement last year, Jorgina Busquets, Managing Director of Football Education, Recreation, and Partner Clubs for City Football Group, shared her excitement about the launch. She remarked, “We are delighted to be opening our first Manchester City Football School in Kolkata with Techno India Group, who are a leading education provider to children and young adults throughout West Bengal. This partnership presents a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of footballers in India, and we are confident that the school’s innovative approach to football education will resonate with both players and coaches.”
She further elaborated on the importance of bringing Manchester City’s methodology to a new region: “We are looking forward to creating a first-class educational experience, through the presence of fully trained, full-time Manchester City coaches, based on the same approach and methodology that we use in our programs in Manchester, tailored to the level of each player. We believe that every player has unique potential, and our program will ensure that they receive the personalized attention they need to thrive.”
Debdut Roychowdury, Director of Techno India Group, also expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “It is with immense pride and excitement that we join forces with Manchester City Football to bring their renowned football training expertise to the heart of Indian football, West Bengal. This initiative is not just about football; it’s about fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and passion for the sport, and we are committed to providing the best possible platform for young footballers to succeed.”

Looking Ahead
As the Manchester City Football School in Kolkata prepares to open its doors to aspiring footballers, the partnership stands as a symbol of the growing influence of international collaborations in shaping the future of sports in India. With West Bengal’s government actively supporting the initiative and Manchester City’s global expertise in football, this project has the potential to revolutionize football education in the region.
The football school is set to become a breeding ground for future stars, who will not only represent Bengal and India on the football field but also carry forward the values and training instilled by one of the world’s most prestigious football clubs. In the long term, this collaboration could inspire other regions in India to invest in similar partnerships, strengthening the country’s footballing infrastructure and nurturing the next generation of players.
